Arnott's
Lodge Hostel

If you are going to stay in Hilo, this is the place to
be. This is an old hotel the owner restored into a
crisp clean
youth hostel, modeled after the youth
hostels in
Australia and New Zealand. It is literally minutes
away from the Hilo airport. If you are flying in
to see the Volcano, and other area attractions, a rental
car is nice to have, but not necessary. They have an airport pickup
if needed, and they have very popular group tours
including a tour to the volcano and to the summit of
Mauna Kea. I really liked the whole layout of the
hostel. They have a variety of accommodations from
pitching a tent in their camping area to private rooms.
The 12 person dorm I stayed in is broken into 3
bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, and 1 kitchen. The
immaculate kitchen was just recently remodeled, and is
complete with all new ceramic tile, stainless steel, and
glass. The 3 bedrooms have 4 bunks each.
There was enough shelving space for my large backpack,
and smaller bag. One thing I liked is the
complimentary safe in the office, where I stored my
valuables such as my wallet and camera.
Down the street about 1/2 mile is the edge
of town. There are some good restaurant's there,
and other store's if you need supplies. A couple
miles down the street is a Wal-Mart, which is where I
took my film to get developed. Arnott's has
complimentary bicycles to help get you there.

They have a great private patio for guests to sit around
and socialize. To the left of the picture is a TV,
washer/dryers and 2 high speed internet computers.
To the right, you can see a wooden structure which is a
10 foot elevated patio around a tree which is really
cool. Also not shown is an extensive TV room with
a brand new large wide screen TV, driven by DVD's only,
in a 300 capacity, easy to use carousel. There are
four roomy couches with enough room for everyone.
At $17 a night for a bunk, I believe a received a great
value for my dollar and would recommend this place to
anyone.
